As you’ve no doubt heard, there has been a problem with prisoners and/or their families using social networking sites to taunt the families of murder victims, as a group we stood together and in response were invited to a meeting with the Justice Minister Jack Straw and representatives from Facebook to talk about how this might be better monitored and for offensive sites to be removed.

The meeting was very positive and in future such sites about homicide victims should be removed quickly.

Why Families Utd are calling for an e-ASBO

Social network sites have become a source of communication that young and old alike can enjoy expressing themselves through. When the sites are abused by perpetrators of crimes to taunt their victims though they become something far more sinister and this should not be allowed to happen. This is not about freedom of speech this is about the rights of victims of crime and the need to see the families protected.

By coming together as one voice the families feel they can make a difference and this was the catalyst for the e-ASBO call being made. We think that the policing of the social network sites can be left to the websites themselves but that this should be subject to review and that the authorities should be able to give the names and any information relevant to the sentenced criminal such as nick names etc to the website management so that regular searches can be undertaken to make sure that anyone with an e-ASBO placed on them is not using the site.

We see no reason why this cannot then be also implemented to prevent on-line bullying and dangerous or inflammatory propaganda being posted. Clearly there is a lot of work to be undertaken in clarifying how best the e-ASBO can work in practice but this is something that will happen in due course. The families are delighted that this immediate call to action has already resulted in a very positive meeting with the Justice Minister, Jack Straw who has agreed to arrange a meeting with the management of social network site, FACEBOOK at the Ministry for Justice which the founder families of families utd will attend. We will keep visitors to the site updated with the progress and meanwhile we ask everyone to keep recruiting friends, family and associates to sign the on-line petition on the Downing Street website: http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/E-ASBO/
