In our short time together we’ve already achieved some much – some of which you will of heard off, and others that you will never really ever hear about. Aside from getting cross-arty support for what we are trying to d- we are working out how we maximise the opportunities presented by our collective will and voice – more of that in the future, but for now below are some ‘wins’ in our campaign.
Bringing Everyone Together As One
No-one has ever looked at things from our collective perspective – not even other families who have suffered so much pain in the loss of their young angels. We have all tended to react in our way coming to terms with our loss, but trying so hard to ensure some good comes out of this horrific situation. Some people are more media saavy than other, some have the ability and know-how to make things happen, but that is not everyone.
Some of the founding families have grow to know each other quite well, offering advice and support to each other, as well as coming together to work for a better solution to this whole problem. After some time, it seemed obvious that our experiences would be of invaluable benefit to people who suffer this plight – so 5 original founding families came together with an open invite to everyone who has been affected to come and join us. We want to make this a collective, that can come together without any agenda to offer support to each other, and begin to work collectively to support each other.
Facebook, Prisoners & The Justice Ministry
Following the news that the killer of Ben was using Facebook to taunt the families from behind bars, we mobilised very quickly and conducted a campaign that led very quickly to a meeting between ourselves, the Justice Secretary Jack Straw & officials from Facebook . The result was the immediate taking down of 30 offensive profiles, lots of debate and a commitment from both the government and Facebook to improve the situation. From improved search and penalties in prison to a procedure that will lead to quicker identification of offensive profiles by Facebook – a small but great early success for Families Utd.
